Portrait of Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1764)

Half length portrait of Lavoisier, extracted or a detail from the Portrait of Antoine-Laurent and Marie-Anne Lavoisier by Jacques Louis David, 1788. Lavoisier is shown at a cloth-covered table, in the act of writing with a quill pen. His posture is looking upwards to where (in the original) his wife stood; Marie-Anne Lavoisier has been omitted from this portrait. Inscribed above : "David pinxt. W.C.Sharpe. LAVOISIER. WILLIAM MACKENZIE GLASGOW EDINBURGH LONDON & NEW YORK". With a printed specimen signature of Lavoisier, lower right. Antoine Lavoisier was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1763.

Original: line and stipple engraving. 19th century
