An allegory of chemistry

Allegorical plate showing Gaia [?] offering a vessel to Hermes, who carries keys and holds aloft a caduceus. The vessel is inscribed 'Influentia' [influence]. Between them is the Earth, inscribed 'Ne Frustra' [not in vain]. Both gods stand on a cloudscape with the Moon and Sun behind. Frontispiece to A treatise for the service of chemistry in general; exhibiting the universal and specific principles of body; the simple and uniform procedure of nature in...the generation of gold... by J Grosman (London, J.Millan, 1766).

Original: line and stipple engraving. 1766
